Generally considered to be the colour of nature, growth and renewal, green can represent the environment, freshness and fertility. It is believed to have healing or restorative power and is the most restful shade for the human eye to view. Green is also associated with money, finances, ambition, greed and jealousy.
If you relate strongly to this colour you are perceived to be practical, nurturing and stable. Negative personality traits lean toward envy and jealousy hence the popular phrase “green with envy”.
Green falls within the cool spectrum on the traditional colour wheel and ranges from pale lime to deep forest hues. Do you like the colour green? I definitely do - it’s right at the top of my list along with but I am very particular about it. When my daughter was living in London England she included a tour of Scotland and I was in awe of the photos she shared. Upon her return she said to me “Oh mom you would LOVE Scotland - it’s SO GREEN!”
Exactly - that’s the shade of green I’m talking about. Rolling hills, grass, meadows and nature. I just breathe easier when I’m around green. I could sit on a park bench and stare up at the trees forever. Sweet yellow-greens remind me of the first spring buds on a branch and tiny frogs croaking in the nearby creek. Dark mossy greens of a lakeside forest filled with the fresh scent of pine soothe my soul. I love the smell of a freshly mowed lawn. That memory in particular takes me back to childhood days of dad working in the garden. It is usually these deep rooted memories that bring a positive association with colour but not all memories spark joy.
Now think about “hospital green”. How many waiting rooms have you sat in anxiously awaiting news on a loved one? How often have you glanced in an institutional bathroom mirror and gasped at the sickly pallor that those mint green walls cast on your face? It’s a totally different association with the colour green isn’t it.
Of course, everyone reacts differently based on their own personal memories and associations. A soft mint or pistachio green could also remind you of your favorite ice cream flavor!
